DESCRIPTION: | NITRISTIC® is an notably sensitive and rapid test for showing bacterial reduction of nitrate to nitrite in fluids. It is mainly used for testing urine - a positive test indicates a urinary tract infection due to the growth of nitrate-reducing (nitrite-producing) bacteria (the most common cause of such infections) in the urinary bladder |
REMARKS: | N.B. Occasionally symptoms from the urinary tract are due to a non-bacterial inflammation or to an infection by a bacterium unable to reduce nitrate, e.g. Staph. saprophyticus or streptococcus - in such cases nitrite tests will of course be negative. To check this out your physician may prescribe a bacteriological culture. In other cases a negative nitrite-test could be due to insufficient bladder-incubation time (frequent urination) or to inadequate dietary nitrates in the urine. Test again at different times of the day. |
PROCEDURE: | Dip the stick's paper-end momentarily in a
freshly voided urine specimen or urinate directly upon it. Read immediately - any pink
tone is positive. Discoloration which may develop after a few minutes is insignificant so
you may dispose of the stick immediately after inspection. - If your urine tests positive, you are advised to inform your physician, even if you are free from symptoms - you may have a urinary tract infection in need of treatment or further control. |
OTHER USES: | - If your aquarium water tests positive, it
probably contains potentially harmful bacteria and should be replaced. - If your drinking water tests positive, it is presumably contaminated and could be dangerous even after boiling - especially hazardous for infants (risk for potentially fatal methemoglobinemia). - If your swimming pool water tests positive, it is probably grossly polluted with intestinal bacteria. Change the water and check out your purification system. |
REACTION TIME: | One to ten seconds - depending on concentration of nitrite. |
